It is all arranged! The Purposeinc 2007 SEO Texas Holdem Charity Poker Tournament at Pubcon Las Vegas will take place at the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino right on the strip, two hotels down from the Wynn.

It will be on Thursday December 6th at 8:00  Changed to 9:00 P.M. Read more below..

Your host will be me, Dr. David Klein (to patients), a.k.a. Purposeinc (online), a.k.a. dk (in person)

The charities include burned fire fighters from the San Diego fire, the wife of a deceased fire captain, a prisoner rehabilitation group, medical clinics and schools in the Sudan, and a water pump and septic tank for an Indian school where 3500 children currently sometimes go without water. I wrote a page about the charities.

Here is a map of the casino. The Poker Room is just to your left when you enter the casino. It is directly under TAO, the ultra sleek night club that sells out every night. Between hands make sure to at least check the people out who are trying to get into TAO, that is a party unto itself!

A $50 tournament fee will be required to hold a seat. A small percent of this money goes to Paypal to cover the transaction, and the rest, around 98% goes directly to charitites. There is also a $1.50 charge from eventbrite, who is providing the online registration software.

I will be making $0 off of this event.

Before you buy in at the tournament players will be required to have a valid Venetian Players Club membership. This is free and you can sign up online.

Then the night of the tournament you will give the Venetian a $150 buy in to play in addition to the $50 charity donation you already made.

Venitian Poker Room Thursday December 6th 8:00 Changed to 9:00 P.M.

(Starting time was changed from 8:00 to 9:00 so as not to conflict with the Microsoft Party)

1. Make the $50 charity donation immediately if you want to play (as soon as registration opens within the next few days).

This money will be split amongst three or more charities. Currently one of them is going to 2 fire fighters who were seriously burned in the San Diego fires in October 2007. The second goes to the wife of a fire fighter who died of a heart attack during the week of the fires in San Diego. The third charity is to help educate some of the Lost Boys of the Sudan. I am still looking for an Asian, European or South American charity (or all three) where the money really goes to help and is not wasted on administration. Not all of these charities are recognized by the U.S. IRS as full blown charities so may not be tax deductible. I am passing the money on to those who I feel need a little help right now, and not worrying about tax savings. (I will be giving more charity details here in the upcoming days)
The $50 just saves you a seat. It is not the buy in for the tournament. You must make the $50 donation in order to play in the tournament.

2. Show up at the Venetian hotel in Las Vegas on Thursday December 6th around 7:00 or 7:30 8:30 at the Poker Room and make your $150 buy in. The Venetian runs one of the classiest joints in town and should run an excellent room.

Of the $150, the Venetian Poker Room has told me that they will be taking $40 for the casino room to cover costs, and the rest will be put into the pot. There will be a gradient payout from first place on down quite a few places. First place should be a fairly decent take.

3. Play the Texas Holdem Tournament and win! (or possibly lose, but not you right?)

4. There will be no refunds of any of the fees. I am not personally making a cent off of any of this, and am doing the work to help the charities and to help the average no name webmaster (I mean high roller!) of Pubcon get a chance to connect with his fellow webmasters!

5. This thing is taking off fast and should be a rocking ride, so if you have any suggestions or see any problems ahead please feel free to comment below. I am expecting it to take 4 or 5 hours depending on how many people we have play. It could go much faster or slower.

6. Check back right here for the Passcode to get in a few days. I am going to invite the paid members at Webmaster world first, and if there is room others can join.

I am still culling over the different dates and time for the tournament. We are getting lots of interest in the event, but I am still looking for more input in regards to what the contestants want in terms of date and time.

I am also trying to get a read on how late I can schedule it in the evening. I am guessing, that a poker tournament would last about 3 hours. Pubcon starts at around 8:00 each morning. Last year I was still deep asleep at 8:00 each morning.

This poker tournament should be very enlightening. As a group Search Engine Optimization guys tend to be very smart, very cunning, and good at carrying out strategies. It will be fun to see the treachery carried out at the poker tables by the guys who have a reputation for bluffing, redirecting, and generally being deceptive.

It is a group who often do not show their cards in life, as the second they do, someone else will snatch them and run down the street with them. They do this well though while sitting in front of a keyboard, but how will they do face to face?

I am still taking input as far as the date and time of the event. I am planning on setting the date by early next week. Because there is so much going on Tuesday and Wednesday, and due to the fact that no one has to get up early on Friday except to go drinking at the official Pub part of Pubcon, I might have the Post Poker Party on Thursday night.

I am still looking for someone who can provide me either with software I can run on this site, so entrants can practice online if they need to learn or a link to somewhere they can, and also a write up or a link to a write up on the rules of poker, in this case probably Texas holdem. The only requirement is that the link not be to an online paid poker site, or a site that links to them for obvious reasons.

This site did not exist a week ago, so I am glad you found it! I announced the tournament in the members only area of webmaster world. It costs about a hundred bucks a year to be a member and worth every penny.

There are other games afoot regarding Pubcon. You can see a photo of one of our invited poker guests Dax in Shoemoney’s post about their Party Like an SEO rockstar. Dax is the one with his pants down.

Since this site has a page rank of 0 being brand new, I figure the links will probably have a value of like -1.

I have gotten some great e-mails of support, first from the BOTW guys offering to sponsor or donate to the charity.

I also have got a great e-mail and got some great wisdom from Clarke Douglas Walton who is an internet attorney and has a Vegas firm called Walton Law Firm.

It was very cool though of both of the above to offer help the first day of the announcement.

I almost have the agreement with one of the most popular, elegant, and hip casinos in town for the poker tournament. I am still looking for feedback as to what the best night will be, and then I will wrap up the agreement and announce the casino.

Texas Holdem has been suggested as the game of choice, and it is also the most popular tournament poker game, but I am still open ears for advice.

I am intentionally not going to link to any bad neighborhoods on this blog even though we are discussing poker for obvious reasons. I am looking for someone who has a non gambling site (meaning good neighborhood) who would like to give the rules of the poker game we choose. I also am looking for someone who can either run on my site, or host on theirs a place where those who don’t know how to play poker can practice online without money being involved.

I have gotten the approvals from the interested parties about the Party and Poker Tournament and it is on!

The exact details will be worked out in the upcoming week or two. There will be a limited number of entries available, so if you are really interested, check back on this blog frequently.

This will be a Poker Tournament for Pubcon attendees with a large portion of the money going to charities, a little going to the casino for hosting and the rest going to the winners.

I will not be getting a dime off of it.

Here is what I know, Brett Tabke said in response to the event, and I quote, “cool”.

I am working on a post Poker Tournament party location that looks over the strip at one of the best restaurants in Vegas.

The Poker Tournament should be at one of the top hotels on the strip, but I need to get the date and time set in stone before I announce that too.

This will be a Poker Tournament and Party for the Pubcon masses. It is especially being held for the guy from Bangladesh who has never been to the U.S. before and knows no one, the guy from Birmingham who just set up his first htacces file, and the girl from Buenos Aires whose parents forbid her to come but she came anyway.

Matt, Danny and even Craig are invited, although if Craig gets flagged too many he will be removed. (I’M JUST KIDDING!)

Mostly I am hoping that having this will attract two luminaries of the search community, Stefan Juhl and Dax.

I want to hear from people the following things;

1. What date and time should the Tournament start?

2. How much should the buy in be? The higher it is the more the payout at the end, but the less people can afford it.

3. What charities should benefit?

Last year I had the pleasure of attending my first Pubcon. I made a lot of new friends, but did not get to meet nearly as many of them as I would have liked to.

There was other chatter on the Internet by other guys new in the ranks who wanted to go to smaller parties during Pubcon where they could rub elbows with each other and make more SEO-SEM-PPC-Developer-Local-Webmaster-Affiliate friends!

So I have been in the works to solve this. An everyone’s event, where it does not matter how much you spent in adwords, or what continent you grew up on. In fact, even Mac people will be invited.

Within a few days I will start going over the specifics of it here.
